ROI NME guide

The Canadian College of Health Information Management is the certifying body for health information national certification examinations in Canada. CHIMA, Canada’s health information management association, is the examination host and responsible for delivering an online proctoring service to all candidates.

Please read this Release of Information (ROI)​ national micro-credential examination (NME) guide in full before applying.

Section 1: About the ROI NME

The ROI NME consists of 50 randomized multiple-choice questions and is 60 minutes in duration. Each correct multiple-choice question is worth one mark.

A passing grade is based on the following requirement:

  • An overall grade of 70% or higher, and;
  • All practice area grades to be 60% or higher.

The competency areas covered in the ROI NME are as followed:

Re-examination

A candidate who is unsuccessful in writing the ROI NME on the first attempt may re-write the examination twice more (for a total of three times). Regular pricing applies for subsequent attempts. The exam candidate must complete the entire examination each time. If a candidate has failed all three attempts, a further review will be conducted.

Ensure CHIMA membership is active

An active professional or professional-associate membership with CHIMA is required during both the application process and when writing the ROI NME. 

Submit application and payment

In order to register for the ROI NME, candidates must submit an application and provide payment. Payment will need to be received on or before the application deadline. To access the ROI national micro-credential examination application, please follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to your CHIMA account, accessible in the top right corner of the screen
  2. Click on your name to access your dashboard
  3. Scroll down to National examinations and select ‘Manage’
  4. Navigate to National certification applications and click ‘Learn more’
  5. Navigate to ROI and select ‘Apply here’

Applicants are responsible for reviewing all information to ensure it is correct in both the application and the CHIMA membership profile.

Documentation requirement

Documentation is required to be submitted with the NME application. Candidates will not be notified of the receipt of their documentation.

This is a one-time submission to the Canadian College of Health Information Management.

Booking an examination date and time 

Approved exam candidates will receive an email from CHIMA 2-3 business days after the application deadline. This email will prompt candidates to book the date and time of their exam. Please check spam/junk folders for this email.

What to bring

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Bringing a piece of paper and writing tool (e.g., pen or pencil) is no longer allowed. Applicants will be able to use the built-in notepad function while writing the exam. This function will allow writers to work through questions directly in the exam platform.

Section 5: Receiving results

Candidates will be able to view their grades by signing in to their CHIMA dashboard. Please select ‘National Examinations’ and navigate to ‘Examination history’. Grades are posted approximately 20 business days* after the examination period ends. An email will be sent out informing candidates when grades are available.

* At times, the College could run outside of these service level agreements due to extenuating circumstances.
